Interview: Peter Sattler talks Camp X-Ray and casting Kristen Stewart

Peter Sattler's Camp X-Ray is both an illuminating and honest depiction of the violence and inhumanity experienced by detainees of a camp in Guantanamo Bay. Part of the 'debate' category of this year's BFI London Film Festival, the plot device lies in the telling of this story though the eyes of a young female Private, Amy Cole (Kristen Stewart) who is a fresh recruit keen to toughen herself up in post-9/11 America. As we live through Amy's experience, we are privy to the still-male dominated and sometimes sexist world of the US army. Struggling to find her place within the rigid structure of the POV camp, Stewart strikes up an unlikely alliance with a detainee (a must-see Peyman Maadi), bringing to light the fact that she may have more in common with the prisoners than her actual comrades. Dinard Film Festival celebrates the best of British cinema

One rather glorious October week saw the Dinard Film Festival celebrate the best of British cinema at it's home of Dinard in Brittany, France. This sun-soaked seaside festival showcased the year's lesser-known indie gems and saw the likes of Roger Allam, Phil Davis, James D'Arcy and Alice Lowe come together to showcase their latest films. Alice Lowe's new film, Prevenge is a deliciously dark comedy about a serial killer spurred on by the voice of her unborn baby and was a stand-out. Other celebrated films included the anarchic coming-of-age musical Moondogs, the feature debut from Philip John. The Dinard British Film Festival was launched in 1989 to bring to France a variety of dynamic and original British productions for both professionals and cinephiles, and continues to be a hub for filmmakers from the British independent scene; keen to get noticed, gain distribution in the European market or to see their films reach new audiences. There is a lot of pressure to get this film right, especially following what was an emotionally stylish Johnny Cash soundtrack-ed trailer. An overhaul of the much-loved Wolverine character who has blessed box office figures for the last decade from X-men onwards, this stand-alone film will thrill fans of the franchise and newbies alike. Writer/ director James Mangold (Wolverine, Walk the Line) took the helm to drive a film which is essentially the antidote to superhero movies; it’s a western road movie that takes it’s time – who thought we’d be saying that following the Wolverine films?.
